Review - The Last Witch Hunter

The Last Witch Hunter is an supernatural action film, directed by Breck Eisner, the film stars Vin Diesel, Elijah Wood, Rose Leslie and Michael Caine.
The Last Witch Hunter follows Kaulder, an immortal witch hunter, when his partner dies at the hands of a Witch vows to hunt down the killer, with help along the way from, Chloe, a witch with the power to go into peoples dreams and The 37th Dolan, a priest that monitors Kaulder.

I walked into this movie knowing nothing about it and surprisingly had some fun with it, the film isn't very good but there is enough there to enjoy certain things.
The story of the film is fine and has a few unexpected twists and turns, the idea of an immortal man who has been alive for 100s of year is a very interesting premise but they didn't delve in too far with it, especially with the things it would do to you mentally which could've been fascinating, but i did find the lore and the world they set up to be very cool, a world where witches and humans live together friendly, but there are a small number of witches who want to rise up and take over again.

The characters are one of the bright spots of the film with interesting characters in Rose Leslie's Chloe and some of the smaller characters that pop up throughout the film, i found Chloe's problem interesting in the fact that she is a witch, who is teaming up with the witch hunter against her own kind, Leslie plays the character very well, adding her British charm into the role, she has a way of being cute and intimidating at the same time which was great for the character.
Kaulder, Chloe and The 37th Dalton in The Last Witch Hunter
The main problem with the film is that it just seems forgettable, the story is very bland and simple, it doesn't have anything really interesting or creative to make it memorable. The action scenes are very genetic and boring, my eyes were glazing over during some of them because of the overuse of CGI and the by numbers fight choreography. Also Vin Diesel as Kaulder wasn't very good, i don't tend to find Vin Diesel as a compelling actor and my mind wasn't changed after seeing him in this film, he is so monotone and emotionless it is hard to care and route for the character, which is a shame, he is the main character, i should be completely on his side!

The Last Witch Hunter is a fun time at the cinema, the film is a generic blockbuster but has glints of greatness hidden within.

6/10
